The basic principle of Vastu lies in the free flow of energy throughout the home and create good vibrations and a nice feeling in the inhabitant of the home. It is scientific and is based upon the principles and laws of nature. If followed correctly, the people can definitely derive benefits and make their stay quite comfortable in their homes.

The entire physical universe is made up of five basic elements, known as the Maha Bhutas or Great Elements -Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Ether. Earth resides in the southwest quadrant, Fire in the southeast, Air and Water in the northwest, and Ether in the northeast. The inertness of Earth in the southwest makes this part of a building perfect for sleeping. Ether renders the northeast ideal for study or meditation.

The East is the direction from which the Sun rises, also called Poorva or Poorab. Its antithesis is the West, the direction of the setting Sun, also called Paschim. When we face the east direction, towards our left is North i.e. Uttra and towards our right is south i.e. Dakshina. The north indicates the region of divine mortality & the south symbolizes the past, the realm of ancestors. At the center lies the zenith - the heart of all earthly activities.

The lord of North direction is Lord Kuber, East direction is ruled by Lord Indra, West is ruled by Lord Varun and South direction is ruled by Lord Yama.

The Directions which are most suitable for different elements according to Vastu are listed below:

The North-East (NE): This quadrant belongs to water. It is the most appropriate place for a borewell, a pond, or an underground water tank.

The South-East (SE): This quadrant belongs to fire, your kitchen, pantry, furnace or boiler should be placed there. Generator, electric meter, and Transformer should be placed in South-East.

The North-West (NW): This quadrant belongs to the air. The property of air is moving, so it is a good place to keep finished goods as they will move faster. If your guest room is located there, guests are not likely to stay for long.

The South-West (SW): This quadrant belongs to the earth. It is the most stable of all the elements, so the use of this area is advised as much as possible.

The Centre belongs to space and is a sacred area. Hence, it is advised to keep it empty and free of heavy furniture so that beneficial energies can circulate freely and bring prosperity.

Most people when purchasing a house, only look at the interiors, flooring, modular kitchen, beautiful bathroom fittings but they do not take into account the principles of Vastu in their mind. In spite of having a huge and beautiful house, they do not have the type of comfort they expected. On the contrary, a person having the knowledge of Vastu can live very happily in a home that is on a low-cost budget but with better energy flow. It is therefore essential that while a person is planning for a home, he should at least know the basics of Vastu shastra to make his life comfortable.
