The Vastu Shastra principles help build homes in harmony with the cosmic elements. These are air, fire, wind, water, earth, and space. Vastu aims to align living spaces with the natural laws and attract positive energy because the energy field surrounding the home affects those living in it.

Modern house design and architecture may not comply with Vastu science. As a result, a home may have Vastu defects that may cause problems such as poor physical and mental health, friction between family members, etc.

Here are Vastu tips and remedies to improve energy flow into the house and hopefully increase peace, prosperity, and abundance.

1) The Front Door: In contemporary homes, steel or fiberglass front doors are common because of low maintenance, durability, and style. As per Vastu Shastra, the main gate should be made of wood or marble as they can absorb negative energies. If your home doesn’t comply with this, here are the remedies that you can follow:

● Decorate the gate with torans and make rangolis
● Keep the area in and around the front door clean
● Have a metal nameplate
● Avoid black colour doors
● The front foor should open clockwise and should be taller than the rest of the doors in the home

2) Open Kitchen: Apartments have open kitchen due to a lack of space. Some homes also have open kitchens adjacent to living areas due to new architectural design trends, etc. However, in Vastu, an open kitchen is believed to be inauspicious because people sitting in the drawing room can see activities happening in the kitchen, the food smell spreads around the home, etc. If you cannot change the layout and direction of the kitchen, you can follow these remedies:

● Put a partition in front of the open kitchen to close the open space. You can use glass or curtain. But wooden partition is favourable.
● Install a exhaust fan to emit out food smell so that it does not pervade into the atmosphere of the house
● In open kitchen spaces, sink and stove are placed closedby. This creates a friction between the water and fire element resulting in disturbance. Place your stove at a distance from the sink or put a partition between the two.

These days false ceiling are in trend, and you will find them in almost all the houses. A false ceiling in Vastu is not recommended as it disrupts energy flow. However, if you want to go with it, here are some home Vastu tips to keep in mind for false ceiling.

● Avoid asymmetrical or sloped false ceiling. Go for rectangles or square shaped false ceiling.
● There should be no pointed triangles or sharp shapes hanging from the false ceiling.
● Never paint the ceiling in dark colours. Opt for white, off-white or neutral shades.
● Modern homes have ceiling at reduced height. As per Vastu design, the ideal height of ceiling should be 10 - 12 feet for movement of energy.

4) Windows and Doors: The modern home architecture have glass windows and doors with metal frames. Metal is considered unlucky in Vastu. Sometimes the windows do not have an opening. You can make these small amendments as per Vastu:

● Make sure the windows have an opening system
● Try to have windows and door frames in teak wood or any other wood as it is auspicious in Vastu.
● If possible, doors and windows should be placed opposite for cross-ventilation
● Oil the hinges of doors and windows to avoid creaking sound as it creates friction in family.
